What makes a good silent auction item?

Picture
  • New merchandise
  • Unique, one-of-a-kind items
  • Gift cards
  • Travel
  • Antiques
  • Hand-crafted items like quilts, artwork, etc.
  • Sports and entertainment memorabilia

Who can I ask?

Any business you visit. Local stores. Most will be willing to help, if they can.
  • Travel agents
  • Hotels, Resorts, Bed & Breakfasts
  • Theme Parks
  • Restaurants
  • Retailers

What do I say?

Just walk up to a clerk at the counter – anyone who seems to be in charge.
  • Say something like, “Hi! I'm _____ and my (son/daughter/friend) (or I) work with an organization called the Adventurers Academy that's doing great work with people with disabilities here in Austin. We're having a huge fund raising event in May called Spring Fest. One of the main parts of the event is a big silent auction. I wonder if you would be able to help us by donating a __________ (you fill this part in, depending on where you're at... 'dinner for two' or 'set of tires' or 'gift certificate' or... you get the idea.)

  • Don't try to memorize this. Just be yourself. Stumble through it. It'll be okay.
  • You can hand them your packet when you start to introduce yourself. They'll look at it while you're talking.
