Academy Course Descriptions

Adventurers Glass Art
Adventurers Enterprises
Monday/Wednesday, 1:15pm - 2:30pm
Adventurers Enterprises teaches and inspires entrepreneurial skills. Adventurers will learn how to market and sell products, both online and in person, created by the Fused Glass and Merchandise Production courses. The money made through this course will directly help fund current and future Adventurer Academy programs.
This course will focus on skills such as:
  • Marketing
  • Managing Inventory
  • Fulfilling orders
  • Packaging/Mailing
  • Generating new ideas
  • Sales
  • Customer Service
  • Bookkeeping

Picture
Book Club
Book Club provides Adventurers opportunities to improve personal reading skills and comprehension for leisure-time reading. The course will feature group reading/listening time as well as individual reading time. During individual reading time, Adventurers will develop and improve independent reading skills through practice and instruction. During group reading/listening time, Adventurers will focus on listening to a longer chapter book and improve skills in reading comprehension through ongoing group discussion.

Bowling
Friday, 1:30pm - 3:30pm (Parents pick-up at Westgate Lanes at 3:30pm)
Bowling is offered once per week at Westgate Lanes to encourage appropriate leisure time activity. Adventurers will bowl two games each week. Concessions and vending are available for drink only purchases as a means to practice money skills in an authentic setting. Parents are asked to donate snacks at the beginning of each semester. At the close of the year (May 2014) the Adventurers Academy will host a bowling celebration featuring food, drinks, and awards at Westgate Lanes.

Community Outing and Community Service
Friday, 9:30am - TBA
Community Outing and Community Service gives Adventurers opportunities to participate in social, recreational, and service activities. Examples from last semester include activities such as yard service, trash pick-up, preparing bags to donate to less fortunate, shopping excursions, movies, miniature golf, outdoor recreation, dining out, etc. Adventurers will spend the day enjoying the community with their friends while developing and practicing social communication skills and awareness.

Merchandise Production
Tuesday/Thursday, 1:15pm - 2:30pm
Wednesday, 1:15pm - 2:30pm
Merchandise Production provides Adventurers opportunities to brainstorm, create, and make original crafts, seasonal decorations, jewelry, shirts, and other merchandise as decided by members of the class. This course will work in partnership with the Enterprise class.

Money Skills
Monday/Wednesday, 2:30pm - 3:45pm
Money Skills is a course designed to teach and/or reinforce skills in using money in community and vocational situations. Adventurers will receive direct instruction as well as have the opportunity to practice skills in simulated and authentic community experiences. This course focuses on skills such as:
  • Money management
  • Coin and bill identification
  • Coin and bill values
  • Counting change
  • Making change
  • Money transactions
  • Using a debit card
  • Basic banking

Pre-Vocational Skills Training
Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30am - 10:45am
Pre-Vocational Skills Training teaches and reinforces specific skills needed to locate, obtain, and maintain employment. The course focuses on skills such as:
  • Telling time
  • Time management
  • Personal information (written and verbal presentation)
  • Identifying and understanding community service and safety words and symbols
  • Basic money skills

Square Dancing
Square Dancing teaches Adventurers to participate in an organized social activity, in this case, the lost art of square dance. Adventurers will have the opportunity to engage in a fun, musical activity which promotes coordination, sequencing, memory, social communication, teamwork, and listening skills.

Video Production
Monday/Wednesday, 2:30pm - 3:45pm
Video production teaches the basics of the art of creating video for entertainment, advertisement, and education. Adventurers will have the opportunity to write, direct, perform, and create various types of video including commercials, music videos, documentaries, and short films. The course will focus on skills such as:
  • Writing scripts
  • Learning scripts
  • Writing storyboards
  • Film terminology
  • Performance
